We are a group of Developers who work in many different CMS systems and have decided to put together an online resource to help people make an informed decision on which particular CMS system they are going to use.
Our experience is that choosing the wrong CMS can cause major issues, particularly as you get further into the project or wish to combine a second stage or extend functionality only to find that they can't do it because of the limitations of the system. The whole website must be then redeployed to another CMS system, usually at the cost of building something from scratch.
There are many different CMS systems around and all have their strengths and weaknesses, though the Adobe Business Catalyst system is one of the few systems that combines a CMS, CRM, shopping cart and blog into one interface, with statistics included. This makes it easy for web development companies to sell.
We have found however that at times the functionality of the system is limited and heavy front end scripting is required to extend that functionality to meet the requirements of clients. Often this can be time consuming and delay delivery by a lengthy period and also can be made redundant by updates to the Business Catalyst CMS.
To make our job easier as developers, we want to ensure that clients are aware of all issues and make an informed decision on the system they are going to use before blindly moving in and insisting on using one system, regardless of the consequences.
